My Summer TBR

I am an avid reader and it is how I spend my free time, there is nothing better than curling up with a good book and getting lost in a story. Although I do read a lot of fiction books, I also like to read books that will teach me something. This summer I am hoping to read these 3 non-fiction books. Each month this summer I am going to read a different book, keep reading to see what is on my TBR (to be read) list this summer. Would you like to read any of these with me?

Helping Students Take Control Of Everyday Executive Functions

Reason I chose this one: I am always looking for strategies to help my students with memory and organization. This sounds like it has great tools to help kids with these tasks. Also, as a mom I am always looking for ways to help my own kids with these areas.

This book presents an innovative model for supporting executive function in students with attention, memory, organization, planning, inhibition, initiative, and flexibility difficulties, including those with ADHD, ADD, autism spectrum disorders and related conditions. The author advocates a student-centred approach in which educators first explore 8 key 'ingredients' with the student: relationships; strengths and weaknesses; self-advocacy and responsibility; review and preview; motivation and incentive; synthesis and analysis; rhythm and routine; and practice and repetition. She provides a step-by-step explanation of how these 'ingredients' can then be used in different ways and in different combinations to successfully address particular areas of difficulty. The approach is clearly explained, and the book contains many useful examples, practical tips and strategies, suggested conversation starters, sample time management plans and other tools that can be adapted to meet the particular needs of individual students. Original and effective, the approach outlined in this book will be of interest to teachers and other professionals involved in supporting executive function in students of all ages, as well as parents and carers.

10 Rules For Raising Kids In a High-Tech World

Reasons I chose this one: As a mom of 1 teen and 2 preteens I am always looking for ways to balance technology with my daughter’s mental health. I have seen some good reviews for this book and I am excited to dive in.

Jean Twenge, PhD, award-winning professor of psychology and author of the “lavishly informative” (The New York Times) Generations, returns with a concrete and accessible guide to raising resilient, successful, happy children in a time of overwhelming technological intrusion.

Parenting today often feels like an uphill battle, with technology invading every corner of our kids’ lives. From the rise of social media addiction to the growing mental health crisis among children and teens, parents are grappling with how they can create a healthy, balanced relationship with technology for their kids.

Bestselling author Jean Twenge provides the much-needed playbook parents have been asking for. Drawing on her decades as a psychologist studying the impact of technology and mental health and her personal experience as the mother of three teenagers, Twenge offers ten actionable rules for raising independent and well-rounded children. From setting “No Social Media Until 16” boundaries to creating no-phone zones like bedrooms and family dinners, these rules are grounded in evidence yet simple enough to incorporate into any family routine.

Short, empowering, and timely, this book equips parents with the tools to combat not just immediate harms such as online bullying but also helps to nurture essential life skills, preparing kids and teens to become autonomous adults.

The One Thing

The reason I chose this one: My sister read this one a few years ago and really liked it. I am someone who can get overwhelmed with all of the things I need to do as well as all of the things I want to do, and it can paralyze me. I am hoping the concepts in this book will help me to focus on one thing, to perhaps get more done.

People are using this simple, powerful concept to focus on what matters most in their personal and work lives. Companies are helping their employees be more productive with study groups, training, and coaching. Sales teams are boosting sales. Churches are conducting classes and recommending for their members.

By focusing their energy on one thing at a time people are living more rewarding lives by building their careers, strengthening their finances, losing weight and getting in shape, deepening their faith, and nurturing stronger marriages and personal relationships.

YOU WANT LESS. You want fewer distractions and less on your plate. The daily barrage of e-mails, texts, tweets, messages, and meetings distract you and stress you out. The simultaneous demands of work and family are taking a toll. And what's the cost? Second-rate work, missed deadlines, smaller paychecks, fewer promotions--and lots of stress.

AND YOU WANT MORE. You want more productivity from your work. More income for a better lifestyle. You want more satisfaction from life, and more time for yourself, your family, and your friends.

NOW YOU CAN HAVE BOTH ― LESS AND MORE. In The ONE Thing, you'll learn to:

  • cut through the clutter

  • achieve better results in less time

  • build momentum toward your goal

  • dial down the stress

  • overcome that overwhelmed feeling

  • revive your energy

  • stay on track

  • master what matters to you
