2026 Summer Reading Programs

Since summer vacation is upon us, it’s time to round up the summer reading programs available to kids. Participating in summer reading can help prevent the “summer slide” or learning loss that can occur over the summer. Reading also helps build fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. And most of these programs have an incentive for completing their program, and that is always a great motivator. There are several options to choose from and I have included links to learn more about them.

Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Journal

For this program kids will read 8 books and log them on a downloadable sheet, that is a bracket, and at the end of the summer, they will decide which book was their favorite. After every 2 books read, bring your paper into Barnes and Noble and get a sticker. Once all 8 books are completed you can return to the store to receive a free book. This program is available for kids in grades 1-6. Only 1 book is available for kids who read all 8 books and completes a reading log. The choice of book must be made from selected books available at the store.

Half Price Books Summer Reading Camp

For this program, kids can earn Bookworm Bucks during the months of June and July. Pick up reading logs from your local Half Price Book store, share what you are reading and earn rewards. The program website also features printable coloring sheets, craft ideas, reading lists, and bookstore scavenger hunt. Bring your completed reading logs to a Half Price Books in July and August and you can earn $5 in Bookworm Bucks good for $5 off of anything in the store.

Camp Book It! with Pizza Hut

This one is so nostalgic for me. I remember getting my personal pan pizza certificate for reading in elementary school! I wish they still had this program for adults. During the months of June, July and August any child that meets their parent-set reading goal can earn a free one topping personal pan pizza from a participating Pizza Hut restaurant. This program has a mobile App where you can set goals, track progress and redeem rewards.

Public Library Summer Reading Programs

Check with your local library, most have a summer reading program. Our local library has one each year and my girls have participated since they were little. Your local library also has many programs in addition to summer reading, they have story time for different age groups, and other reading themed activities. These programs are also free to use and they help support your local library.

I hope you find a summer reading program that works for your family this summer.
