Summer Reading Programs
In my previous post I listed some ways to help prevent the summer slide or summer learning loss. One of those ways was to make sure your child was reading everyday. Today, I am including information about several different summer reading programs, many of these programs offer an incentive for the number of books completed. Keep reading to see if you can find a program that works for your family.
Barnes and Noble: Open to grades 1-6, kids read a designated number of books and write about their favorite part in a reading journal. Once they read the designated books, all you have to do is bring the completed reading journal to your local Barnes and Noble. Students can earn a free book from a curated list. This reading program runs through July and August. Find the reading journal and all other information here!
2. Book It Summer Camp: If you are of a certain age, you probably remember the Book It program from elementary school. All you have to do to join this program is download the mobile app and set some reading goals. The app allows you to track your child’s progress and they can earn rewards. Any child that meets their parent set reading goals can earn a free personal pan pizza from participating Pizza Hut restaurants. This program runs during the summer months: June, July, and August. Learn more about the Book It program here!
3. Scholastic Online Summer Reading Community: This also requires you to download the Scholastic Home Base App to join their community of readers. Kids can read books on the app, start and maintain a reading streak, interact with their favorite characters and more. This app is monitored for safety. Find out more about the Scholastic program here!
4. Sonlight Summer Reading Challenge: Sonlight is a homeschool curriculum publisher and they have created a printable summer reading kit with reading activities that will keep your child engaged with books all summer long. Find out more about the Sonlight Summer Reading Program here!
5. Your Local Library: Make sure you check out your local library for summer reading programs. Most libraries have summer reading programs and activities for all ages. Many libraries also have story times and other reading themed activities throughout the summer.
I hope you are able to find a reading program that works for your family! Are there any other reading programs you would add to this list?
