Specialized Tutoring Summer Reading Challenge

I love a good summer reading challenge and today I am bringing you some fun printable pages for you to use with your kids. Summer reading challenges are fun ways to get kids excited about reading. They can also motivate students to read more and to read different types of books.

A summer reading challenge is a program that encourages students to read (or listen to) a variety of books during a period of time. You can check this post I put together of summer reading challenges hosted by businesses.

The American Library Association lists some benefits of a summer reading program:

  • Encouragement that reading will become a lifelong habit

  • Challenges can draw in reluctant readers

  • Reading can help combat the summer slide and help students maintain skills while out of school for the summer

  • Challenge can help with interest in books and the library

As a mom of 3 kids and a teacher/tutor for over 20 years, there are a couple of benefits I have noticed as well:

  • Books/reading can spark curiosity in all sorts of different topics

  • Reading provides for a screen free activity

  • Reading can be a boredom buster

What’s included in the reading challenge packet

The printable set of reading challenges is set for all ages and there are 9 printable pages (including cover and terms of use page)

The first page is a summer reading goals sheet. It gives students the opportunity to set a goal for the number of books they want to read, a plan for when they will read, things they will do to accomplish there goal and a place to list the books they want to read.

The second page is a summer reading log, kids can keep track of all of the books they read and give the book a star rating out of 5 stars.

Track your reading minutes: Kids color in a space on the board for each 20 minutes they read.

Book Summary: sheets to help kids practice writing skills. They are asked to write a 3-5 sentence summary of the book they read.

Bingo Boards: Included is a bingo board for each summer month. They have challenges that include locations to read, types of books to read, as well as who chooses the book they read.
